Posted by Manoj Kookkal on 18 August 2015
Patients, families and allied health workers are invited to attend the Fontan Education Day 2015 to hear up to date information and research related to the Fontan circulation and life experiences. The Education Day will include presentations from specialists in paediatric and adult congenital heart disease focused on a range of topics including; long-term care after the Fontan operation, support services and how to access them, research updates and future research goals. The sessions will provide an opportunity for audience questions and discussion, with aspects of the program focused on patient insights and concurrent break-out sessions. Merry Christmas

Posted by Kylie Flament on 20 December 2013

Wishing all of our patients, families, staff, supporters and visitors a very safe and happy festive season.  Thank you to Rachael who baked these amazing cakes for us recently - you spoil us!  And thank you to Precious Hearts who have once again put up a beautiful Christmas tree and surrounded it with gifts for patients who will be with us on Christmas Day.  No one wants to spend Christmas in hospital, but it is thanks to kind and generous people like you that it is made just that little bit easier.

Thank you to everyone for your support of the Heart Centre this year.  It has been a busy one, with lots of good news, groundbreaking research and great new equipment.  Very best wishes from the whole team here.

Our Heart Babies (by nurse Julie)

Posted by Kylie Flament on 18 July 2013
Julie, one of our lovely nurses, was inspired to write a few words about a little patient that visited recently and who made a big impact...  Our Heart Babies Baby T came to visit today.  With her rosy cheeks, cheeky smile and big angel eyes.  Daddy proudly placed her on the ground and said "Julie, look!  She's a walker!"  And with that, T toddled towards me, arms outstretched, eager and giggling. I crouched down as she walked confidently to me and fell into my arms, looking so proud of herself.  We cuddled and she never once pulled away.  She was so relaxed and happy, and glad to see me even! The joy on her parents' faces was clear and especially heartwarming because I remember a time not so long ago you see...  Baby T was in a different place.  Sad and cranky after having her heart fixed, she didn't like nurses in blue - me included!  Waving her little hands in front of her, saying "no,...

'My Heart Story' books

Posted by Kylie Flament on 19 June 2013
Parents often ask us where they can find patient stories and resources to help their children to understand what is happening, so for the past year we have been working on some books that follow the journey of a patient at the Heart Centre for Children.  With the amazing work that Karen Weir from the Child Life Therapy department at The Children's Hospital at Westmead has done, combined with the generosity of young Ellis and his parents, Rick and Maria Vermunt who allowed us to photograph and write about Ellis' journey, we have made two such books at long last. 'My Visit to the Pre-Admission Clinic' follows Ellis as he comes in for his pre-surgery check-ups, including a blood test and meeting with an anaesthetist.  'My Heart Operation' follows him on his day of surgery, from being admitted to going to sleep just outside the operating theatre and what happens when he wakes up again. Thanks to Rick and Maria we have eight copies of each ava...

New website!

Posted by Kylie Flament on 9 May 2013

Welcome to our new and improved Heart Centre for Children website.  There has been a lot of work behind the scenes building a site that offers as much relevant information as we can for families, medical practitioners and donors.  We hope you like the new format and pages.

There is always room for improvement though so please contact us or send in some feedback with your thoughts and ideas.
