How Noni the cow helped the Heart Centre

Posted by Kylie Flament on 7 August 2014
We are constantly amazed by some of the creative ways that families and supporters of the Heart Centre for Children raise funds to enable us to continue our ground-breaking research and to purchase much-needed medical equipment.  The family of one of our patients, Zachary, is one of the most creative in a while, putting their calf, Noni, up for sale at the Royal Easter Show and donating half of the proceeds (a whopping $2,500) to us!  They also sent us a lovely letter, saying: "We appreciate all that you did for Zach during his surgeries and hope you can put the money to good use by helping out other children in need." Knowing that we need to purchase some new monitors and prams for our ward shortly, we can't thank you enough, Zach and family! If you're inspired by Zach and his family's efforts, click here to see How You Can Help. ...

Mohammad's heart transplant

Posted by Kylie Flament on 5 August 2014
Mohammad is a brave young man and a talented soccer player who was diagnosed with a heart condition at the age of three that eventually meant he needed a heart transplant.  In this short clip he talks about the struggle of having to sit on the sidelines while his friends played sports, and coming to terms with needing a new heart, as well as the importance of organ donation (from someone who both gave and received).  Thank you to Transplant Australia for making the video and sharing it on YouTube, and to Mohammad's family for allowing us to share his story.   If this does not play in your browser, head to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuVDzGzIMic. ...

Thomas Smith's visit

Posted by Kylie Flament on 29 July 2014

Artist Thomas Smith and his wife Rita kindly visited the Heart Centre for Children today, donating two original paintings and bringing 29 brand new soft toys with him that were donated by a school in Shanghai to bring smiles to our patients' faces, like that of Danielle (pictured), age 11.  We look forward to working with Thomas and Rita over the coming months and years as they pursue their plans to raise funds for paediatric cardiac research for us.  More of Thomas' art can be seen at www.thomasartgallery.com

New cath lab

Posted by Kylie Flament on 22 July 2014
We are delighted to announce that thanks to the incredible generosity of the Sargents Pies Charitable Foundation, the Heart Centre for Children will be replacing our cardiac catheterisation lab in late 2014.  This paediatric cath lab is the only one of its kind in New South Wales, and it allows us to perform keyhole surgery on children who would otherwise require open heart surgery.  This means that sick children can be treated and go home faster, which is incredible.  All of our staff, as well as patients and families, are very grateful for the opportunity to have the best possible equipment thanks to donors like Sargents Pies so that we can have the best results for our sickest little patients. We wish to thank the Sargents Pies team for their amazing gesture and look forward to opening the new cath lab in the new year.

Congratulations Glenda!

Posted by Kylie Flament on 30 May 2014
Congratulations to our very own Nurse Practitioner, Glenda Fleming, for being awarded the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network Excellence in Nursing Award.  Glenda joined the Heart Centre team just a few months ago, having worked in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) previously, and is a wonderful addition to our team.  On behalf of everyone at the Heart Centre, we are so proud of you, Glenda!
