Thank you Glengara!

Posted by Kylie Flament on 24 June 2013

Thank you to Janice, John and everyone at Glengara Retirement Village for your generosity over the weekend.

We were kindly invited along to watch the Waratah Girls Choir perform on Saturday afternoon (and they were breathtakingly good!).  Retire Australia, Glengara Village and some of the individual residents then made some kind donations to the Heart Centre for Children as the charity of choice, which will be put towards new equipment to help us to diagnose and treat more children.

It was wonderful to meet some of the residents, hear their stories and feel what a wonderful community they have at Glengara.  Thank you again to all of you.  It was a wonderful afternoon and we hope to see you again soon!

'My Heart Story' books

Posted by Kylie Flament on 19 June 2013
Parents often ask us where they can find patient stories and resources to help their children to understand what is happening, so for the past year we have been working on some books that follow the journey of a patient at the Heart Centre for Children.  With the amazing work that Karen Weir from the Child Life Therapy department at The Children's Hospital at Westmead has done, combined with the generosity of young Ellis and his parents, Rick and Maria Vermunt who allowed us to photograph and write about Ellis' journey, we have made two such books at long last. 'My Visit to the Pre-Admission Clinic' follows Ellis as he comes in for his pre-surgery check-ups, including a blood test and meeting with an anaesthetist.  'My Heart Operation' follows him on his day of surgery, from being admitted to going to sleep just outside the operating theatre and what happens when he wakes up again. Thanks to Rick and Maria we have eight copies of each ava...

5.7km for Mosiah

Posted by Kylie Flament on 19 June 2013
5.7km for Mosiah The event: is the 5.7km Gold Coast Suncorp run. Held: on July 6th 2013. Our aim: is to raise $3000. Our purpose: to bring more awareness to Congenital Heart Disease in memory of Mosiah, and to raise funds for the Heart Centre for Children so they can help more children like him. Glen and Nichole running 5.7km together you say? Well yes it's true but we have a great motivation - our son Mosiah who died on the 18th of March 2009 from a congenital heart disease called Hypoplastic Left Heart Sydnrome. The purpose of our run is to raise more awareness of Congenital Heart Disease. Here are the facts: Congenital heart disease is the greatest killer of Australian kids under one Every day in Australia around six babies are born with a heart defect.  That's over 2000 each year. Every week, four precious lives are lost. There is no known cure or prevention. So if there is no cure what's the point you ask? Let m...

Echo Gala Dinner

Posted by Kylie Flament on 11 June 2013

The lovely Carol Caleo, whose father supported the Heart Centre for Children even before it was known as such, and her team are putting on an Echo Gala Dinner at the Sofitel in Sydney on Friday the 13th of September.  It promises to be quite an extravaganza, a good excuse to put on a black tie or ballgown, and help us to purchase a much-needed cardiac ultrasound (echo) machine.

See www.echogaladinner.com for more details and to become a sponsor.  Tickets will be on sale soon.

New equipment making a difference

Posted by Christian Turner on 4 June 2013

Occasionally babies are born with atrial flutter, a type of abnormal heart rhythm. Previously, the treatment for this was an electrical shock which is painful and requires a general anaesthetic. With the support of a generous donor, we purchased a High Output Stimulator in December 2012, which allows us to fix the heart rhythm without the shock or general anaesthetic.  It also allows us to manage rhythm after heart surgery, making a big difference when the usual pacemaker is unable to deliver the required energy.  Thank you to the company that kindly donated $3,500 for this machine.  It is already making a big difference to babies and children at the Heart Centre whose hearts need a little help to pick up a normal beat.

Staff profile: Edith Salanga

Posted by Kylie Flament on 29 May 2013
Edith is one of the nurses on Edgar Stephen Ward, and is currently a Clinical Nurse Educator as well, training other nurses to do their best work.  I managed to squeeze in a few minutes with Edith between orientation sessions and checking on families to ask her a few questions and find out what makes her tick.  The first thing you notice about Edith is her sunny personality.  She exudes warmth and you can't help but smile back, especially when she starts talking about her job.  Edith fell into cardiac nursing 11 years ago by accident but absolutely loves it and says she wouldn't want to work anywhere else now.  She's happy to be in a surgical unit where there is a lot going on and patients with different needs keep you on your toes, and she loves being able to work with patients of diverse ages (although she professes a soft spot for 4-5 year olds who you can have particularly fun interactions with).  And while she gets on with all pa...

Genetics study

Posted by Gillian Blue on 27 May 2013

A/Prof David Winlaw and I recently participated in a study which has been published in the highly acclaimed journal, Nature Genetics. The study identified a region on chromosome 4p16 that is associated with a risk of developing ostium secundum atrial septal defects (ASD). Variations in this region are estimated to account for 9% of the population-attributable risk of ASD.

Join in the Color Run on 25 August

Posted by Kylie Flament on 16 May 2013
On Sunday 25 August, a team will be running, walking or crawling the 5km Color Run course while dodging colour bombs being thrown at us.  You start the event decked out in white and you're lucky if you can find an unblemished spot on yourself at the end of it.  We welcome anyone who would like to join our team to do so by signing up at http://thecolorrun.com/australia/sydney/ - our team name is Heart Centre for Children.  It should be a fun day out for adults and children, and a nice way to meet some of the staff that look after everyone at the Heart Centre.  Feel free to give me a call on (02) 9845 2326 if you would like to know more or are thinking about coming along.  We will also be fundraising for some much-needed equipment.  Every little bit helps!  Click here to make a donation. ...
